Given favourable comparisons to everybody's favourite MySpace sensations, Job for a Cowboy and The Black Dahlia Murder, it's hardly surprising to find Cincinnati's Rose Funeral serve up each of the eleven tracks on their debut with all the tenderness and compassion of a pitbull with rhoid rage. The likes of "Sodomizer" and "Left to Rot" are certainly not for the faint of heart, the production alone recalling levels of intensity previously heard on _Effigy of the Forgotten_, while every track rapidly shifts gears between all-out blasting and pummelling, bone-jarring breakdowns -- with very little variation in-between. Of course, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that this approach soon wears painfully thin, and even when Rose Funeral chuck the odd ham-fisted melody into the mix in an attempt to spice things up, they appear incapable of delivering anything truly memorable. When they have the grit between their teeth, _The Resting Sonata_, isn't bad by any means, but for all intents and purposes it never goes beyond providing a few quick and cheap thrills.
