Anachronaeon - _The New Dawn_
(Stygian Crypt Productions, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)
After Anachronaeon's demo _As the Last Human Spot in Me Dies_ was afforded wider exposure through a re-issue via Stygian Crypt Productions, it was only a matter of time before their debut full-length was afforded a wider release too. This is a concept album centred on alien abductions, and the lyrics are delivered by the protagonist, Jack, or via the omniscient Storyteller. However, only the lyrics convey the shift between the first and third person; it isn't noticeable from the delivery. Musically, they maintain the style and standard of the demo, combining decent production and arrangements with catchy leads (albeit less than on the demo) and no small amount of Maiden influence. I don't know if it is deliberate, but the song titles are comprised almost entirely out of clichés -- "The Plot Thickens" and "The Light at the End of the Tunnel". The vocals alternate between mid-range and legible growls through to (yet again) unconvincing clean singing, that (and yet again) is not in key. This is not as infectious as their demo, but it's a respectable enough release that will not cause any significant embarrassment.
