I've mentioned before that I Hate seem to have a knack for dredging up off-centre doom bands, but of late they have a fetish for female fronted (sort of) doom bands -- see Jex Thoth, Sub Rosa and Serpent Cult -- and until they start signing generic rubbish, I won't complain. Reino Ermitano is the latest addition to this sub-subgenre, hailing from Peru.As with Jex Thoth, there is an occult flavour, but filtered through Santeria rather than the magickal eccentricities and excesses of Crowley. An organ provides a slight psychedelic flavour, but in deference to their Latin American roots, evokes visions generated through ritual peyote and mescaline use rather than hippies dropping out and tuning in on LSD.Worthy of special mention is the album's closer, which is strongly reminiscent of -- and probably intended as a tribute to -- the Black Sabbath classic "Planet Caravan". If I had to mention a negative, it would be the Spanish vocals; but I can hardly hold it against a band that they sing in their native language, can I?One question remains: how did Swedish based I Hate sign up with these southerners?
