Masterstroke - _Sleep_
(Dynamic Arts Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)
Masterstroke is a Finnish group that extracts the best from power metal (clear and vibrant vocals, toe-tapping melodies and head banging riffs) whilst abandoning the extraneous cheese (such as dated and superfluous bursts of virtuosity and an obsession with fantastical balderdash). In other words, think of Masterstroke as the inverse of a Janus-faced beast with Rhapsody and Dragonforce at the forefront. The vocalist is not as good as those of the above, but after umpteen black metal albums with feeble and atonal attempts at clean singing, it will take a lot before a vocalist will be totally hopeless. Maybe it's their Finnish origins, but there is a sombreness that the near-evangelical aforementioned lack. Just a tad, mind you; this is still very much an up-tempo album that contains a fair amount of solid numbers.
