Magister Dixit - _My Anger Is an Eternal Field of Demonized Mercenaries_
(Mankind's Demise, 2007)

There must be something in Francophone Canada's water, as this is the second Quebecois act in recent days to have a vocalist that sounds a bit too much like Immortal's Abbath. This initially turned me off the album, but I appreciated it more and more with each successive listen. The trio (plus session drummer Auster, who has also provided drums for labelmates Monarque) provides a full sound, staying away from the over simplicity that plagues one-man shows, whilst the presence of two guitarists fleshes out the music. Arguably, this is a bit too trebly, in the "is the bass knob broken?" sense, and it bears a strong resemblance to Marduk circa _Nightwing_. Hey, there are worse bands to sound like, and although Magister Dixit may not push the boundaries so much as cautiously and lightly press against them, they do provide a satisfying dose of blackened sensibility.
