Down Under based Red Descending do something as unbelievable as the platypus and meld together two genres as exhausted as symphonic black metal and melodic death metal to create something unique. A swathe of omnipresent pseudo-symphonic provide a backdrop -- and not always in the background -- to their melodic meanderings. One could not ask for catchier songs, and if I have a criticism it is that it sounds a bit thin -- both the guitars and synths need more 'oomph', although they are in correct proportions in the mix. The only departure (ahem) from this motif is "Departure", which replaces the symphonics with an EBM backing, and it works just as well. One must be aware that this is an independent album and that they have used their own resources to produce this labour of love, but I cannot give them higher than 7.5 as they are obviously capable of much more.
