Demonstealer - _And Chaos Will Reign_
(Demonstealer Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (6.5 out of 10)
This EP is the solo debut by (The) Demonstealer, vocalist and guitarist for Demonic Resurrection, India's premier extreme metal band. The raison d'ĂȘtre for a solo release is lost on me; Demonstealer was the primary driving force behind the quartet, and this retains many aspects of their thrash based sound, to the extent that this could just as easily have been Demonic Resurrection's third opus. The lead guitar has taken centre stage and his ubiquitous melodic hooks dominate, to the extent that other instruments, such as keys and the rhythm section, are not so much a supporting cast as filler, every bit as dull as the guitar is electrifying. The songs are short, sometimes too short, and lack the mainstream accessibility that his previous project had.I am with an overwhelming feeling that this was a tentative foray into a solo work, the equivalent of dipping your big toe into the pool to test the temperature. I don't doubt that The Demonstealer (or is it just Demonstealer these days) has the ability to strike out on his own, but seems to be held back by own (ahem) demons.
