Cyaegha - _Steps of Descent_
(Canonical Hours, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Cyaegha is inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, America's second greatest writer of the supernatural (the greatest is obviously Poe), providing poetic synopses of Lovecraft's work or at the very least set in the Lovecraftian Cthulthu universe. Almost all; I don't recall any Lovecraft story called "Fuck-Start My Dinner", which is obviously focused around the usual pornogore codswallop. They certainly aren't the first to be inspired by Lovecraft's sinister world, but at least it's a respite from orcs and elves.
Most of the songs consist of death metal that invites comparisons with Cryptopsy and Deeds of Flesh, barring a bizarre and somewhat silly carnival-esque interlude. They are not able to capture the aura of menace that emanates from Lovecraft's finest moments, but they do seem to be more focused on creating fairly technical death than atmosphere, which is borne out by a production that leaves little room for creating a certain ambience. Overall, an acceptable tech death entrant.
