Abhorred - _The Infinite_
(Independent, 2008)
by: Paul Williams (8 out of 10)
Although the title for the first UAE metal band to break out of the underground scene here goes to Nervecell, this extreme quartet that go by the name Abhorred pretty much embody the small and reclusive underground death metal scene in this part of the world. Having been around for almost a decade, now the group, inspired by all things brutal, has certainly come into their own with this stunning EP. Instead of languishing in the plentiful riffs spewed out by the fore-fathers of death metal, Abhorred seem to develop a well rounded atmosphere that is part technical brutality and part philosophical despair, never deterring from a formula that is set out from track one, "A Lifelong Philosophy", to the finale "Overthrown Humanity". Now you might be thinking that this is really death metal for the thinking man, but for all you necro-Neanderthals out there, there are the intense vocals and the solid breakdowns to satisfy your urge to yell "Ugh" as you throw your body around and headbang as though there is no tomorrow -- which after listening to this band and reading some of their "humanity is going to die out very very soon" song titles, you will probably believe it.

Possibly the only bad things that can be said about this EP is that it is too short and there seems as though there could be so much to offer, but it's put into five songs each in between the three and four minute mark. Also the production does no justice for the songs, especially the lead guitar sound, which at times is completely overwhelmed by the rhythm guitar, and even the vocals on occasions seem to take over from the excellent riffs which are on show here. But even these two things cannot stop me from proclaiming that this is certainly a band that could stand up to a challenge and deliver the goods on their next musical outing.
