Their record label may tag them as deathcore, but before you go merrily skipping to the next review, you can be rest assured that The Modern Age Slavery are several cuts above your average troupe of tight-trousered flunkies. For one thing, this quintet's bread and butter doesn't gamble on a litany of monotonous beatdowns and paptastic three-note filler to drive its point across. Instead, the likes of "Red Lines of Obsessions" and "Descent Into Oblivion" draw on the classics, and the urgent conviction of early Slayer and Entombed is amply represented in the midst of the pummelling hardcore strains that this crowded subgenre is famous for. Indeed, such is the band's overt fondness for vintage over modern, that the latter act's classic "Wolverine Blues" gets a thorough and infectious working over, serving as the grande finale to a record that by turns is brutal enough to leave even the most hardened unbeliever gasping for breath.
