Wielding the metaphorical hammer, End the Century forge one of the stronger independent EPs to emerge in recent months. That's EP in the conventional sense -- to use it as a euphemism for a demo would be as insulting as it is inaccurate. To many ears this may sound like just another metalcore band, and their allegiance to this genre is indisputable. But few vocalists can equal their throat-lacerating power, and the predictable clean vocals are thankfully infrequent. The overall mood is strangely melancholic, even when they perform the melodeath-cum-thrash chops that are practically mandatory for any modern sounding band, but is presented in a manner that renders it fresh and invigorating, rather than tired and stale. These six songs will not revolutionize metalcore, but they do suggest that End the Century will not be independent for much longer.
