The Cold Existence - _The Essence_
(HateWorks, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (6 out of 10)
A common denominator amongst a significant portion of Swedish bands is that even if originality is low, they can at least present an interesting listen that comfortably straddles melody and aggression, descending neither into technical wankery nor overly simplistic barre chord riffing. Such is the case with The Cold Existence, a new entrant to melodeath that is actually from Gothenburg! The Cold Existence does absolutely nothing to persuade me that this genre is not rapidly approaching saturation point; melodies all sound similar to many other thrash-tinged melodeath. But they do what they do with considerable skill and vibrancy that is sufficient to elevate this above the other wannabes. The only problem is that this is like a rollercoaster: enjoyable, over too quickly, but with no independent memorable moments.
