Verjnuarmu - _Ruatokansan Uamunkoetto_
(Dynamic Arts Records, 2008)

Verjnuarmu proclaim to be performing "Savo' metal", which is the Finnish dialect spoken in Savonia and parts of eastern Finland. My cynical side can't help but think their unusual genre description is linguistic sleight of hand, designed to attract attention away from the far from original music. It makes for a decent enough listen, but mid-tempo melodic death with a pinch of thrash and a smidgen of heavy is hardly a boundary breaker, especially if the sing-along choruses and shredding guitar solos are added. Perhaps I am looking too hard for what is wrong; their debut was for corporate behemoth Universal, whom I trust almost as much as televangelists. The songs are straightforward, whilst the vocals range from growls to clean singing. It's a fun journey, which is not particularly original but with sufficient personal touches to ensure it is not merely a rehash of what has gone before.
