Battle Dagorath - _Eternal Throne_
(Mercenary Musik, 2008)

The intro and outro on _Eternal Throne_ are provided by Vinterriket -- who is also responsible for the mastering -– serving as the perfect entry and exit points into their world of Tolkien-inspired black metal. Metal thematically based around Tolkien's world always seemed both parasitic and lazy: firstly, Tolkien is not the only fantasy writer, and secondly, if you have to write about a fantastical world, be original and construct your own, as Za Frumi did. This is by-the-by; I didn't hold it against Summoning, and I'm not going to hold it against Battle Dagorath either. Even if this is considerably less interesting than Summoning's dullest moments.

Their Tolkien black metal is not nearly as epic as I expected, unless "epic" has been redefined to mean overlong black metal numbers that would have benefited from judicious editing, which may offset the monotony that emerges on a number of occasions. Even with shorter songs, this would still be a rather standard exercise in black fury, parading its Nordic influence all too obviously. The vocals are unnecessarily reverbed, presumably for that extra dose of "evilness", and quite frankly, I've heard all this before. Not as bad as some, but hardly the best either.
