Lyrinx - _Nihilistic Purity_
(Insidious Poisoning Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
Up to now, French label Insidious Poisoning Records has failed to impress, releasing atmospheric experimental black metal frequently akin to but a mere shadow of the legendary Légions Noires. This is about to change with the release of _Nihilistic Purity_, by the UK based Lyrinx.

They will be probably be compared to Xasthur, but this would fail to convey the breathtaking despair of these five tracks. (Actually six, but the rehearsal version of "Another Life Ready to End" is as pointless as it is bad.) Some may decry its monotony, but a certain degree of repetition is a must for this style and cannot be seen as a negative. Proof of this can be found on "Another Life Ready to End" (not the inane rough mix), whereby I defy anyone not to be drawn in by the hypnotic and withering hatred. The vocalist is excellent, sounding truly tormented without sounding cartoonish, while the instrumentation is solid.

Insidious Poisoning Records have released this only on vinyl, but it should not be a problem for any true-blooded black metal fan. If it is, a CD version is planned on GoatawaRex. Several splits will be released in 2008 and a full-length is intended for a 2009 release. Watch this space.
