Machinery - _The Passing_
(Regain Records, 2008)
by: Jackie Smit (6 out of 10)
Had I not known better, I would happily have bet my car on Machinery's sophomore effort being the work of two separate bands. Such is the disparity between the Nevermore-esque trad stylings of the disc's opening track and the melodic death metal of "Reason Is Truth" that only subtle aesthetic touches alert one to the fact that _The Passing_ isn't a throwback to the split albums of yesteryear. Amidst this creative schizophrenia, Machinery -- much to their credit -- prove to be fairly adept at either style. Without exception, every track on their first offering for Regain is soundly constructed, and delivered with the sort of class that's more or less a given in their home-country of Sweden. Quite why they choose to maintain an arms-length between their influences for the duration of the album, however, is befuddling to say the least, and makes for a highly uneven listen. Still, for what it's worth, it has at the very least piqued my interest for what they may get up to next.
