Roaring out of the City of Brotherly Hate, sludge punk noobs Javelina kick up a stir early on in their nascent career with this bone jarring, self titled debut. "1000 Pound Man" reveals the gorilla in the room right out of the gates, a fairly slow grinder showcasing the multifaceted trade off of Mike B and Chubbrock's vocal interplay. "Let the Blood Flow" kicks it up a notch, allowing the uni-monikered "Erik" to give his kit a good workout, and from there the aural beatdown never fully abates. Basically you can tell when a band's members all go by their first names and/or rename themselves after a vintage novelty rapper who quickly found himself in the 99 cent bins, then you can rest assured the tuneage proferred will be a reasonably no bullshit affair, and that's exactly what you get here. Though the boys cite High on Fire as an influence -- and you can hear that especially in the concussive swagger of Erik's skins abuse -- there is little heed paid to that band's experimental forays; instead Javelina play it close to the vest and lay down the rock with reckless abandon. Which is mighty OK, last time I checked.
