Waldheim - _Fight Against Time_
(Independent, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Do not be misled buy the Germanic name, as Waldheim reside somewhere in the Iberian lands. On this, their self-financed debut, Waldheim exhume the melodeath skeleton and flesh it out with lush keys and "Beauty and the Beast" vocals, an approach not dissimilar to Epica. Some of the melodies are inevitably oversized, inspiring the contempt bred by familiarity, whilst others sound similar to what Cradle of Filth may have come up with -- but this would be the result of imbibing from a common inspirational spring rather than a misguided attempt at emulation the English vampires. The vocal approach may be overused, but only in the most general sense, and is invigorating in this context. The resulting album is not an essential listen, but neither did I feel my time was wasted. A decade from now, Waldheim can include this in their discography without embarrassment.
