Nidsang - _The Mark of Death_
(Drakkar Productions, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
I heard Nidsang's self-titled demo a while back, and whilst it was okay, I didn't consider it strong enough to land a record deal, let alone a debut on legendary French label Drakkar Productions. Perhaps Noktu (Drakkar Productions founder and Celestia frontman) saw a latent talent that needed a bit of time to form, undergoing a minor metamorphosis from melodious melancholic black metal to this raucous celebration.

"Atra Mors", originally from their demo, has been re-recorded; but whilst the original was imbued with wrist-slicing melancholy, the new version is more angrily despondent. It does not really fit with the other songs -- even a Von cover ("Lamb") was less conspicuous. Only black metal neophytes could possibly consider this album original, but it does represent a remarkable progression by the band and provides an above average entrant. For once I am glad that I was wrong.
