Mortuary Drape - _Into the Catachthonium_
(Hell Institute, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
Mortuary Drape have been around since 1987, performing their own brand of "black occult metal" and still powering ahead. This is not the follow-up to 2004's _Buried in Time_, but a compilation of _Into the Drape_ EP (1991) and _All the Witches Dance_ full-length (1994).

"Black occult metal" is simply code for simple and primitive yet eerily atmospheric death metal akin to, but different from, early Mayhem and Beherit. Keys, cleanly strung arpeggios, low yet lucid bass notes and female vox coalesce to create an amazing and ominous atmosphere well before such elements became de rigueur.

The vocals lie somewhere on the spectrum between a yell and a scream, whilst the drums sound more like a thrash gallop when they build up speed, rather than heretical blasts. The EP is the more atmospheric of the two, whilst the full-length showcases more adept musicianship and compositions, sadly resulting in some sacrificing of atmosphere.

An essential slice of nascent black metal that should be an essential addition to self-respecting fan of the genre.
