Grima Morstua originates from Argentina, an unlikely home for what is one of the strongest black metal albums of recent months. The obvious highlight is the varied and tortured voice of Serpienenev, who indulges in croaks, ear piercing screams and pseudo operatics, but is never, ever dull. The bass is barely present and the drums are percussive wallpaper more than an integral part of the songs, leaving the guitars to do the work. The result is a sparse and trebly sound, dominated by the vocals and tremolo guitar work, creating a cold and harsh atmosphere. It's not a work of groundbreaking originality, but builds incrementally on what has preceded them, adding their own delicious subversive twist and doing it damn well. That's good enough for me.
