Exit Strategy - _United State of Amnesia_
(Independent, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Freed from the extraneous frivolities of mathcore, jazzy interludes and porno-gore, Exit Strategy focus their considerable energies in synergising the most brutal death and grind elements to create one of the most solid entrants to the genre. Well, not always the most brutal -- some melodeath runs can be heard, but this serves to emphasise the more vicious aspects.

The lyrical focus is an examination of the various socio-political ills that plague contemporary society, akin to Nasum. The use of spoken word samples is unfortunate, but they are in-between songs and thus more easily ignored, and something they are sure to discard as they develop their art. Their mid-length songs, averaging around four minutes, allow the tracks to reach fruition as 'proper' songs in every sense of the word; all too often grind material sounds more like ideas for songs than a properly developed number. _USoA_ manages to avoid the typical pitfalls that plague many bands operating in this realm, to produce a respectable independent entrant that provides a heavy, occasionally melodic listen that stands out all the more from the hordes due its apparent ordinariness.
