Evoken - _A Caress of the Void_
(I Hate Records, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
It is not hyperbolic to state that Evoken are the premier active doom band from the New World, and _A Caress of the Void_ cements their well-deserved reputation -- one that has received no serious competition ever since _Embrace the Emptiness_ was unleashed on an unsuspecting world way back in 1997. [This classic was recently re-released on Solitude Productions.] Since then, their compositions have increased in complexity, remaining true to their roots and without departing from an atmosphere of crushing, almost overwhelming despair.

_A Caress of the Void_ is Evoken as known and loved by all: crushing riffs and depressive cleanly struck arpeggios accompanied by low-pitched growls emanating from the darkest recesses of lungs, and stripped of all romantic and gothic pretensions. Too slow and stripped for romantic death, too complex and fast for funeral, Evoken lie somewhere between the two, synergising both to produce an almost peerless opus that serves to further cement their already well-established reputation as one of the world's finest practitioners of the doom craft.
