Inexacta - _Previous Trick Us_
(Independent, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Chileans Inexacta may not be Sepultura clones, but that doesn't mean that their Lusophone cousins have had no impact, and their contemporary metal is permeated with Sepultura-esque grooves. In addition, the vocals are not too far removed from what Max (Cavalera) was doing on _Chaos AD_. Some riffs, such as the one that appears two minutes into "Devastated", are reminiscent of the shorter and punchier Sepultura numbers such as "Dictatorshit". (For some reason unbeknownst to me, the song titles have been listed in a jumbled up order).

At this point, our readers would be justified in considering the opening caveat to be meaningless, but it must be emphasised that although obvious similarities are present, Inexacta are not aping the Brazilian masters. In any event, their groove filled metal is only mildly diverting; they are not the first to indulge in this style, nor are they the last, and there are many who are better. There are some decent riffs, but not enough to sustain interest over an extended period. The exception is the instrumental "Assuming the End". Starting with a brief cleanly strung arpeggio, before launching into a brooding rhythm accompanied by a couple of spine tingling leads, before drastically but effectively shifting gears into more progressive territory, allowing the lead guitarist full reign. If the entire album consisted of numbers like this, it would be brilliant -- but it doesn't. Pity.
