Suicide Silence - _The Cleansing_
(Century Media, 2008)
by: Jackie Smit (7 out of 10)
Not to be outdone by their contemporaries at Metal Blade, Century Media have delivered another in a growing list of releases seemingly spawned for the express purpose of making most of the extreme metal fraternity seem like timid circus geeks by comparison. Hailing from Riverside, California, Suicide Silence's bio hints at black and doom influences, but if indeed these ever existed, they were drowned out a long time ago by the relentless pummelling that remains a constant for the duration of their debut disc. A production boasting all the subtlety of a one ton concrete slab adds extra muscle, while Mitch Luckers' dueling high-pitch and growled vocals provide about as much variety as these lads are capable of. It all means that by the time we're in second act territory, Suicide Silence have already played most of their aces. But when sonic intensity is delivered with this much straight-laced conviction, it still has all the potential to go down like a pint of liquid nitrogen in the right circumstances.
