_Let There Be a Massacre_ is a grave wish, a misanthropic ode to the inevitable Apocalypse, a fittingly sombre and distorted musical piece in which underground aesthetics and experimentation go hand in hand. While this is unmistakably doom metal with all its emphasis on repetitive structures, slow disharmonic riffs and devilish roar, the approach to the music is quite specific. Melodic leads combined with occasional samples and hectic military-style drumming do their part, but the real surprise lies somewhere else.

You just don't find banjo -- or accordion for that matter -- in most metal albums, do you? Said instruments lack any diabolical credibility. Still, lone procreator Emil Brahe has included them without losing any of the menacing end-of-days atmosphere. What's more, there is an instrumental piece ("Apocalypse") that is entirely acoustic, relying solely on samples, banjo and accordion -- and it fits the album nicely.

For all their hateful ideological charge, tracks are instantly enjoyable; _Let There Be a Massacre_ is a hypnotic, yet varied album with a very original and atmospheric approach. A most delightful debut.
