Eternity - _Funeral Mass_
(Avantgarde, 2007)
by: Pedro Azevedo (6.5 out of 10)
While trying to gather some information on this record, I soon came
upon the fact that this is actually a re-release of a demo
(originally recorded under the name Fear of Eternity). Fortunately, as
far as demos usually go, _Funeral Mass_ is among the more reasonable
picks for a re-release. Eternity's genre of choice, which is to say
black metal of an old-school persuasion, helps disguise the
recording's origins as a demo, as the production job becomes quite
adequate for one's expectations. The music is fairly straightforward,
which was also to be expected, with a welcome exception midway through
in the shape of the slower and doomier "One Way Hell". No real
attempts are made at innovation, again unsurprisingly, which sets the
bar quite high for how much Eternity would need to excel at
reproducing this particular style in order to set _Funeral Mass_ aside
from the crowds somewhat. Ultimately it's neither here nor there; a
decent listen by all means, but one that fails to rise above the mass
of similar releases out there.
