Averse Sefira - _Advent Parallax_
(Candlelight Records, 2008)
by: Jackie Smit (8.5 out of 10)
You could point to Deathspell Omega's latest platter as the inspiration behind the increased use of discordant riffing and frantic, atonal guitar flurries on Averse Sefira's fourth full-length outing. The truth however is that this Texas trio has always had comfortingly unique style all of their own, and _Advent Parallax_ is a certainly a welcome return to the fray after 2005's criminally under-rated _Tetragrammatical Astygmata_.

This time round, a blistering "Descension" gets us underway and immediately conspicuous is the reverent, if obvious, nods to Immortal's bone-chilling blasts and Angelcorpse's primeval savagery. "Seance in a Warrior's Memory" continues the kinship with blackened brutality, Sanguine Mapsama's vocals tearing through each grime-encrusted chord with an otherworldly zeal. But it's "Serpent Recoil" that takes top honours. Here Averse Sefira regale us with a majestic clash of molten-lava groove and a faint undercurrent of melody clawing its way through the aural detritus until it's just audible enough to be completely and utterly devastating. It leaves little doubt that this troupe have evolved into a distinctly more blistering act, and one which one would hope will finally see 2008 as the year they get the recognition that they so richly deserve.
