Liholesie - _Videniya_
(Stygian Crypt Productions, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Liholesie is the creation of Sever (maybe the name sounds decent to Slavic ears), his mix of ambient and folk representing a departure from the usual doom and black orientated acts on Stygian Crypt's roster. His upbeat sojourns are far removed from the darkened excesses of Raison d'Être or Penitent, and while there is absolutely nothing wrong in straying beyond those oppressive confines, it is possible to create something that is simply too upbeat -- and this in a nutshell, is the main flaw with _Videniya_. The tone is a tad too happy, a touch too saccharine to appeal to aspirant Heathen warriors and seems more apt for tree-hugging, pill-popping hippies. This perception is not helped by some of the cheesier synth tones, which come uncomfortably close to sounding like muzak or the panpipe versions of popular rock songs. A pity, as invoking this comparison diminishes what Liholeise is attempting to convey. This is not too far removed from latter day Burzum; the songwriting and latent talent is present, but the realisation is risible.
