Godless Rising - _Battle Lords_
(Moribund, 2007)
by: Jeremy Ulrey (8.5 out of 10)
Fronted by two ex-Vital Remains members, Godless Rising expectedly dabble in punishing exercises in aural endurance, the weight of cliché buried beneath an avalanche of hatred and just general distempered ill will. _Battle Lords_ tips its hand just by title alone, eight tracks of frenzied death worship treating the concept of warfare and violence like just another day at the gym. "Sadistic Ritual Carnage" promises to do everything but tear your soul apart with ridiculously fast blast beats and repeated chants of "sacrifice your flesh", making the listener a willing accomplice in his own ignominious demise. The title track is a relentless boot camp drill gone wrong, its intended audience strafed with misanthropic shards of crystallized hate. Godless Rising neither forget nor forego the power of the riff, as evinced in "Battle Lords" and the intro to "Heathens Rage", a high pitched, wheedled solo like a foreboding siren drawing unwary travelers to their doom. Over the course of 40 minutes Godless Rising never hit a sour note, and _Battle Lords_ serves as fair warning that these Rhode Island natives are scaling the heights and will gladly toss your ass off the nearest precipice should you choose to stand in their way.
