Endstille - _Endstilles Reich_
(Regain Records, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (8 out of 10)
A surprisingly necro addition to the Regain roster, Endstille, with their militant posturing and German lyrics, could quite easily be lumped in with the NSBM crowd. Yet a scan of their biography suggests that their discontent adopts more of a scattergun approach, and with their latest full-length they certainly don't waver to express this in a tidal wave of category five fury. Raw, organic and blisteringly fast, _Endstilles Reich_ appeals in the way that _Battles in the North_ was able to many wintry moons ago -- by bludgeoning the listener into total submission, only letting up slightly on the blasting when it's genuinely teetering on the brink of being redundant. And yet, there's also a level of maturity to the riffing on tracks like "Vorwarts" and "Scars" that elevates the underlying melodies to more than simple conduits to sonic pandemonium. The end result may not quite be in the league of some of their Scandinavian cousins just yet, but there's a depth and charm to Endstille's music that demands attention.
