Fleshcrawl - _Structures of Death_
(Metal Blade, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (5 out of 10)
About thirty seconds into one of the most ham-fisted intros ever committed to disc, Fleshcrawl have all but dropped the ball entirely. Not that their back catalogue was every truly in danger of raising expectations to the contrary, but between the seething triteness of such tracks as "Written in Blood" and "Fleshcult", and a production job that -- despite coming courtesy of Studio Toninfusion in their native Germany -- smacks more of a fuzzed up "Sunlight Special" than anything else, _Structures of Death_ finds Fleshcrawl sounding suspiciously like a Dismember tribute act.Of the few exceptions, the grinding malice of "Spirit Dressed in Black" provides the most vivid and enjoyable antithesis to this comparison. But eight albums into a career birthed almost two decades ago, you'd have thought that the band had enough creative fuel in the tank to provide us with more than just a few bright moments on a record that for all intents and purposes is as disposable as yesterday's newspaper.
