Not to be confused with fellow Americans Vrolok, Nosvrolok appear to be aiming for a melding of aggression and atmosphere akin to _De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas_ era Mayhem. This is especially noticeable with regard to the prominent bass, inviting comparisons with the chunky bass sound of the _From the Dark Past_ bootleg. The syncretisation appears to be less than successful, as _The Luciferian Doctrine_ is not as atmospheric as Mayhem -- admittedly, it is hard to achieve an effective atmosphere without the use of keyboards, acoustic guitars, flutes and other cheap tricks, but there is also a shortage of aggression. I do not have a problem with their overall approach, but by now it sounds rather generic. They will need to work at imbuing their blackened output with their own distinctive voice. This is not a bad album though, and the grim trio provide a reasonably entertaining albeit unremarkable sampler of the new wave of USBM.
