If you are new to the Trelldom experience, it's best not to expect an overabundance of similarities to Gaahl's primary musical concern. While _Til Minne..._ is unmistakably grim in its outlook, this band elect not to hammer their point home in Gorgoroth's relentlessly pummelling fashion. Instead, Trelldom's third full-length is a more organic affair; raw, textured, and, given the relative lack of any overtly Satanic imagery, distinctly more meditative. Interestingly, this approach evokes an aura that often ends up sounding even darker and more ominous than anything Gorgoroth have delivered in recent years.

With lyrics almost entirely in Gaahl's native tongue, the opening title track and its follow-up "Borkomne Svar" keep the blast beats reigned in, each song almost hypnotic in its blend of dissonant melody and almost militant rhythms. "Fra Mitt Gamle..." drops another gear or two before unleashing all manner of savagery in gloriously archetypal fashion just past the two minute mark. "From This Past" comes from nowhere with a New Wave breakdown that is jaw-dropping in its efficaciousness. But it's the nearly eleven minute "Steg" that takes centre-stage: relentlessly harsh and simmering with frost-bitten atmosphere, it is an epic and defining moment on a record that will surely warm the cockles of even the most elitist heart.
