Korpiklaani - _Tervaskanto_
(Napalm Records, 2007)
by: Jeremy Ulrey (8.5 out of 10)
I'll be the first to admit to finding Korpiklaani's albums fairly interchangeable, but in their case that's not such a bad thing. Korpiklaani take themselves about as seriously as an old hair band stripped of all their ballads and "18 & Life" knockoff troubled youth anthems. Except these dudes seemingly spend most of their time communing in the woods with their fellow beer swilling bros and wouldn't appear to run across a sufficient number of scantily clad females for the latter to inspire their work much. Either way, their entire catalog -- _Tervaskanto_ included -- is one super rich wealth of stomping romps through frisky Olde World folk jigs served up through a filter of overdriven metal.

Unlike many bands that call themselves "folk metal", Korpiklaani want nothing to do with forlorn paeans to whatever Gods have blighted their fields and made their women barren; here it's all about the party. There is always at least one song devoted to nothing but drinking, but it's hard to listen to any of the songs -- regardless of lyrical content -- and not want to crack open a cold one.

"Let's Drink" dispenses with the subtleties from the word go, a rollicking celebration of Finnish humppa decadence crying out for a pewter mug and a sawdust dance floor. "Running With Wolves" recreates a spirited race through the forests with beasts of the night nipping playfully at the heels.

Throughout, guitars and percussion are never overbearing, giving the traditional acoustic instruments -- violin, flute, accordion -- not only a chance to shine, but in many cases center stage. Bottom line: if you're a fan of previous releases, _Tervaskanto_ won't let you down; and if you're new to the 'klaan, this is as good a place as any to start.
