Broken Dagger - _Chain of Command_
(Record Heaven, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 10)
Record Heaven / Transubstans Records seem to be focusing on hard rock and metal sounds from the Seventies and Eighties, of which Broken Dagger are merely the latest addition. This young Swedish band perform speed/power metal in the vein of early Blind Guardian (replete with the usual fantasy themed lyrics), a style of music popular at a time when their balls had yet to drop! However, their adopted sound has not aged particularly well and sounds extremely dated. It is performed competently, if unmemorably. As the album progresses, the songs are weaker and steadily lose their catchiness, yet always retain a particularly overly dramatic sense. But this liking for the dramatic more often than not veers towards the theatrical, and is little enhanced by the emergence of non-conventional rock instruments such as violin. Their musical competency is fortunately at an acceptable level, but work now needs to be done on other aspects.
