Lord Belial - _Revelations_
(Regain Records, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (5.5 out of 10)
Not that they'd purposefully have wanted to run their band into the ground, but you have to wonder what this Swedish quartet were thinking as they were nutting out ideas for their seventh full-length. Their previous effort, 2005's _Nocturnal Beast_, was -- and I'm trying my best to avoid an obvious pun here -- a refreshing and exhilarating adumbration; a band finally shaking the trappings of their proto-Dissection roots and coming good with something they could proudly call their own. With only the odd exception, _Revelations_ follows a reverse strategy. While "7th Seal" gets the record off to a promising start and the epic "Death as Solution" -- replete with vocalist Thomas Backelin going all iron Viking on us -- delivers quality in wholesale doses, by the album's halfway mark Lord Belial have hit a wall. What filters through for the rest of the record's forty-five minute run time is the sort of tepid Swedo-metal dross that was boring a decade ago; recycled, regurgitated and still hopelessly unconvincing.
