The wholly instrumental intro "Gryning" sets the tone for the following ten pieces of fantasy-driven, semi-black, semi-heavy metal of epic proportions. Keyboards are as essential as the buzzing riffs here -- in fact, it is indeed the impressive combination of heaviness and atmosphere that makes "Nedgång", "Ur Djupet" and "Ormhäxan" some of the band's best pieces ever. Still, Finntroll would not be Finntroll without the obligatory humpa melodies and memorable singalongs, so present they are in jolly, fast-paced pieces "Korpens Saga" and "En Mäktig Här".

_Ur Jordens Djup_ ends in a grand style: the mighty "Under Två Runor" (combining a straightforward black riff with acoustic guitars and spoken word passages) is followed by "Kvällning", thirteen minutes of folk melodies and flowing ambience. The final treat is a hidden track of pure trollish polka and drunken Finnish jamboree.

After several listens and a good deal of ale consumed along the way, the obvious conclusion is that this is a rather worthy addition to the Finntroll discography.
