Sordid - _Valley of Punishment_

Canada has a lot to offer musically aside from Cryptopsy, and by this of course I mean Bryan Adams and Loverboy. Kidding. Jeez, just imagine if the U.S. was known primarily for exporting N'Sync and Smash Mouth (David Hasselhoff was forfeited to Germany oh so reluctantly). Sordid come stampeding out of the frigid Canuck tundra with a monumental slab of blistering brevity, _Valley of Punishment_. I typically am loathe to quote the same influences the press materials insist upon, but in this case I think the label has nailed it dead on with Dying Fetus and Misery Index. For diversity they also mention Immolation and Exhumed, but I think we can stick with the former.Clocking in at under 40 minutes, _Valley of Punishment_ races by fairly quickly on an adrenaline rush of unmitigated fury, even though on further inquiry some of these tunes are longer than others. At over seven minutes, "Bodily Dismemberment" is the epic of the bunch, a storming rager that is briefly undercut by a bizarrely tuned guitar solo; but "Pathological Surgery" is probably the best of the bunch, its Cannibal Corpse-inspired guitar histrionics firing off what turns out to be a veritable riff catalog with old-school Carcass cribbed lyrics. A worthy find, Sordid focus less on innovation and more on playing to their main strength, which is unmitigated balls out death.
