Kiju - _Demo(n)cracy_
(Independent, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (5 out of 10)
Metalcore is fast becoming the new melodeath: the market has reached or is fast approaching saturation point, while the majority of new entrants regurgitate what has gone before, providing little, if anything, that can be regarded as a new take on the genre. This is the trap Kiju fall into: they feature all the usual trappings of the genre (drop D tuning, power chord riffing, shouted vocals with an occasional emo vox), and whilst they may provide an acceptable listen, their own, unique voice is noticeably absent. This will hold the attention of the most ardent metalcore fan and those largely unacquainted but with an interest in metalcore; for those with greater exposure to the style, but not quite diehard fanatics, this will induce a strong sense of déjà vu.
