Sol Asunder - _Horribly Human_
(Independent, 2007)

It is time for yet another entrant to the melodeath school, and the perennial question of whether they add anything new to a vastly oversaturated genre demands to be answered. The answer is a qualified "no". While an identifying voice has yet to be established, their melodies, although somewhat derivative, are extremely catchy and will gain them more spins than they otherwise would have received. Their catchiness and accessibility perhaps explain why they managed to land a spot on "Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam", one of the first games for the Nintendo Wii. I'm not too sure that an appearance with bands that I strongly suspect would be pop-punk at worst and nu-metal at best is the appropriate vehicle for the their very European sound, but there are far worse ways to promote an independent band -- and in light of the sheer number of Gothenburg inspired acts, this is one way of standing out from the melodic masses. However, this in no way decreases their derivative nature, and Sol Asunder will need to dig deep to find their own voice should they wish to join the pantheon of quality melodeath acts.
