Twilightning - _Swinelords_

With a cover depicting bloody dollar bills and grinning skulls accompanied by a title like _Swinelords_, one might expect this to be a politically fuelled hardcore or grindcore sonic slaughter. Instead, it's opinionated heavy metal from a band previously associated with the power metal circles. Things have certainly changed in the Twilightning camp, and 2007 finds these Finns well into a more classical sound of hard rocking guitars and mid-tempo tracks, heavily relying on vocal harmonies and choruses. Opener "Isolation Shell" sets the tone for a ride through Maiden and Megadeth influenced tracks, with solid guitars, occasional melodic hooks and Pöyhiä's vocals soaring high -- his performance being by far the most impressive feature of the album. "Vice Jesus" and "Reflection of the Cuckoo" operate in definite heavy territory, while the semi-balladic "Wounded & Withdrawn" and "Not a Word" are more of a hard rock breed -- thankfully lacking any cheesy 'heartbreaking' lyrics. The MTV bashing in "Pimps, Witches, Thieves & Bitches" we could have gone without -- it's at least as cliché as rhyming "witch" and "bitch".Bottom line: not bad.
