The most fatal flaw is these Aussies' self-released EP is the guitar tone; it simply sounds too much like a certain much-maligned British black metal band. The band are more than just a simple clone however; they do possess some worthwhile ideas. The riffs are suitably melodic, hinting at an additional Gothenburg influence, while the production is more than acceptable for an independent production. However, the guitar tone ensures that they cannot escape the shadow of Cradle of Filth, and one is left with the feeling that this is a band that is still struggling to find their sound. Not unusual for a band at this stage of their career, and certainly not fatal, but it does result in a less than pleasing experience for the listener. Ultimately, Forlorn Suffering falls into a musical purgatory: neither bad nor particularly good; not a complete clone, but hardly original either.
