Puissance - _Grace of God_
(Equilibrium Music, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (6.5 out of 10)
Puissance are one of the stalwarts of the Swedish post-industrial scene, having released a number of albums on a variety of labels over the years. Although a narrative vocal approach is preferred as an accompaniment to their neo-classical martial meanderings, some 'proper' vocals are present, especially during the choruses. And therein lies at least part of the problem: the melodic choruses such as on "Grace of God" and "Warzone" immediately make the songs more accessible and seem almost tailor-made for an appearance on a goth club's playlist. The song structures also tend towards the conventional, which is unusual for a band in the experimental field. Combine this with an intuitive feeling that they didn't make an attempt for this album, that they are simply going through the motions and that this album is the result. It is not all bad; it's just that a veteran band such as Puissance is capable of much better.
