Weltbrand - _The Cloud of Retaliation_
(Sadolust, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)
This is the side project of RSD Xul of Funeral Winds fame. RSDX also feels the need to flirt with some industrial elements and samples -- these are entirely token, as barring a filler interlude, they are tagged on to the beginning or end of a song. They add absolutely nothing any of the songs and the interlude has me rushing for the "next" button. Either they should be used more effectively, or preferably discarded altogether. In light of their infrequent use, it is entirely possible to enjoy this with scant regard for these annoyances, and _The Cloud of Retaliation_ is an otherwise acceptable helping of black metal. The mix is decent, staying away from the shoddy production of newer acts but still retaining a raw and uncompromising sound. The vocals and the pitch are both higher than Haatstrijd (another project featuring Funeral Winds members). Although they occasionally slow down, they clearly prefer relentless blasting, coming dangerously close to the oft derided "norsecore" sound (think Marduk, Dark Funeral). However, the unusual high-pitched snarl may mean that it will take a while to get used to Weltbrand -- but in the end it's worth it.
