Negapadres 3.3 - _Exstrophy of Amphigouris_
(Hermetique, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (9 out of 10)
Negapadres 3.3 is a new signee to the Hermetique label, and rather bizarrely contain members of Belgian EBM act a:GRUMH. I have no idea what they sound like, and quite frankly, don't care -- but Negapadres 3.3 is thankfully far removed from dark dance, and I have no hesitation in holding this to be one of more outstanding releases I've heard this year within the field of dark ambient.A considerable variety of effects are used, ranging from the predictable and the orthodox (water flowing, cicadas, howling dogs, etc.) through to the unconventional (Concorde warming up) and the downright fucked up (Tasmanian devils mating). With such an array of sounds and being on the Hermetique label, one thing is certain: this will not be any ordinary ambient voyage. Initially it sounds unfocused, but closer repeated listens reveal coherence not initially apparent. This is a hard album to get into, but once you allow yourself to be drawn in, it's like an avowed atheist receiving a religious epiphany. Sometimes disturbing, sometimes enchanting, but never boring. Not an easy journey, but the destination is worth the effort. Let's hope they give up their (musical) day job; it cannot possibly be as interesting as this.
