Folkvang - _World of Wisdom_
(Ancient Nation, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
Initially released in 2004 on cassette, _World of Wisdom_ has finally received a long-deserved release on CD. This was the first Folkvang release and doesn't differ too much from the follow-up, _On the Wings of Destiny_, in combining recycled riffs with a post-Burzum sound. (The reader is referred to the review of _OtWoD_ for a better understanding of their sound.) The astute reader would have noticed that I have given it a slighter lower mark than _WoW_'s successor, despite the strong similarity in sound. The reason for this is that _WoW_ is a less diverse album than _OtWoD_, and features less sublime softer passages than Folkvang's second opus.

There are two covers on _WoW_, both recorded after the initial release and included as bonus tracks. The first is a cover of Burzum's "Dunkelheit", which is best avoided, while the second is a cover of Bathory's "One Rode to Asa Bay", which is one of the most exquisite covers I have heard. The primary reason for this is deceptively simple; Winds has omitted to record vocals. However, he retains the original atmosphere, embellishing it with their post-Burzum sound. If Quorthon were still with us, I cannot imagine him not approving this cover, especially after the damage wrought by Mystic Circle's abomination.

Together with _OtWoD_, this cements Folkvang's position as the premier Belarusian metal act.
