Grecian outfit Impalement are yet another band floating around in a sea of death metal, but with a little bit of twist: although _Unreel the Abyss_ is an unmistakablely a death metal CD, there is a deep end that is lacking, resulting in a rather jangly guitar sound. An improved production would probably cure this 'defect' -- but it would also risk killing one of the more idiosyncratic and interesting elements of their sound. This unique sound is their strongest aspect, especially in light of the song arrangements, which otherwise contain few surprises. The vocals run the gamut of death metal vox from grunts through to screams. A melodic edge is present, but without the excessive melody preferred by the Gothenburg crowd, ensuring a rather catchy first half. Unfortunately, Impalement loses steam in the second half, with a subsequent drop in quality. Despite having been around for a while, they have never quite managed to gain the support of a label. Perhaps now they will gain some deserved backing.
