Rome - _Nera_
(Cold Meat Industry, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
Rome's debut EP _Berlin_, released a mere three months before _Nera_, failed to make much of an impression on me -- and not without reason, as _Berlin_ was an amateurish attempt with a considerable amount of filler. Apparently, _Berlin_ was merely intended as a taster for this, their debut full-length, and it certainly sounds as if Jerome Reuter (Rome's sole member) actually spent some time on _Nera_.

Although _Nera_ retains the basic sound of _Berlin_, the compositions are stronger and the melodies more sublime. The samples which irritated me so much on _Berlin_ are still present, but are better chosen and do not annoy me nearly as much as they did previously, and in many cases enhance the more bombastic moments.

_Nera_ displays considerable variety, as some songs are relatively conventional guitar driven ditties while others have a more ritualistic feel. Elements of a wide range of genres are present, from dark pop, ("Reversion") through to martial industrial ("Nera"). The major flaw is that the vocals are almost always sung in the same timbre with little variance; some variety in this department would greatly enhance Rome's music. Not quite as excellent as suggested by the hype (which rarely is the case) but still a respectable effort from this nascent project.
