Impious - _Holy Murder Masquerade_
(Metal Blade, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (5.5 out of 10)
With a grand concept brought to life by a beautifully illustrated graphic novelette rendered in the CD sleeve, you're almost rooting for Impious to come good and deliver the monster record that 2004's _Hellucinate_ should have been.Judging the proverbial book by its cover in this case brings mostly disappointment however, as Impious regurgitate a hundred Swedish riffs from yesteryear with very little in the way of creative insight to lend the music just a hint of originality or x-factor. Songs like "Bloodcraft" and the brooding title track break the conveyer belt mould and win out by virtue of the sheer exuberance with which they're performed -- but overall, _Holy Murder Masquerade_ is the sort of album you recommend to that die-hard Hypocrisy fan who's worn out his second copies of _Abducted_ and _Virus_.
